We are a federally funded program of 10 staff and up to 100 children in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.

Goals

1) To support children in acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary for their academic lives, and to adhere to state testing standards.
2) To motivate children to attend school and love learning.
3) To build self confidence and self esteem and to support social skills that will help with academic and social success.
Challenges of a New Program

* Staff, students and parents need time to get used to any new program. There may be behavior or academic issues until this happens.
* As problems and issues arise, they are worked out as the program grows and people adjust.
* The school and it’s day time staff must adjust to the school being used at other times. Classroom availability, clean-up and use of materials may be an issue.
Program Plan Based on Student Population and Educational Research Population:
Some of the students that are chosen have behavior and/or academic difficulties in the regular school day. Some of these students have trouble learning in a traditional classroom and tend to do better with alternative learning styles and small groups. Many of these students have difficulties with sitting still and being quiet. They are motivated by energetic activities and active learning.
Research:
Research has given us information about how physical activity helps children focus on academics.
Research has given us information about the length of time that students are in school and whether this helps improve test scores and motivation.
Research has given us information about how children learn best in small groups and with one- one support.
Research has given us information about how a jump in scores may occur at first but what really demonstrates academic growth are long term learning goals.
